Learning is fun. It opens new doors, broadens your horizons, and keeps you young. But, once you're free from a syllabus, reading requirements, and the constraints of school, many find it tough to keep learning.
Here are a few tips to aid your intellectual growth in 2017.
1. Keep a Curiosity List
Can you remember a time when you were watching a movie, talking to a friend, or taking a walk through the city and something inspired you? Don't let that moment pass! Those sparks of inspiration should be the things that you further pursue, so make it easy on yourself by starting a curiosity list.
"We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing things because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths." Walt Disney
It can be as simple as an Evernote list, a notes app, or pen and paper--but start your list today!
2. Know How You Learn Best
Recent research has shown that "one in four Americans didn't read a book last year." As discouraging as that may be to some, it is not an indicator that Americans are not learning.
You need to know how you learn best so that you can take that budding curiosity list and turn it into action. If you love to read then buy a book, but if you would rather listen to a book then check out Audible. If you prefer to watch a video then check out YouTube or simply search your topic online. Watch a Ted talk.
If you have access to the internet, a wifi-enabled device, and desire, then there are no limits on what you can learn.
3. Start learning Today
If you have inspiration and desire then start learning today.
Go to the library and borrow a book or educational video if you're short on cash. Skip an afternoon of television and go for a walk in the city or through a park and then make a list of a few things you want to start learning. Just start. Once you start then your world will continue to open up and that encouragement will keep you on a path of continual learning.
Pick something today--it'll improve your life and the lives of those around you.
